See the picture below on the left? I look crazy scary and the hair is out of control!!!! (Note: I took like 20 selfies and this was the one decent one haha) Yes…that is ALL of my hair (and some on the side, but the frame didn’t even have room for it (haha) So, it was time for a cut and new layers to re-frame my face and give everything a lift :)
By adding shorter layers to my uber long hair, not only was I adding body to my hair, but the texturizing thinned out my hair (which I definitely needed) so I instantly felt “lighter” and the movement in my hair was more flowy. Below is a picture of what her hair looked liked after…uhmazing and really pretty, right? ๐
On that note, if you have straight or fine hair, you can use regular cutting scissors (the ones with a straight razor), but if you are like me (thick and/or coarse hair), it’s better to use thinning shears (which are ones with the jagged edges).
(1) She cut her hair wet, but I did mine dry so I flat ironed and parted my hair down the middle. (picture below)
(2) During the video, she will talk about making “3 pie sections on EACH side.” However, because my layers were really long, I had a hard time with this so I did 4 pie sections instead and it worked out great.
(3) Her 1st front layer was a tad bit short for me so I started my first layer around my face at my chin. (Before it was at my shoulders.) So, tweak the length of your layers as needed.
After putting the baby down for a nap, I watched the video at least 2-3 times to make sure I understood everything and starting snipping away! Before cutting my hair, I had a more rounded look for my longest layers in the back, but after the cut, I ended up with a v-layer (shown to the right) and I LOVE it!
I ended up taking off 1 inch at the bottom (since I wanted to keep my length), but added a TON of shorter layers starting at my chin and moving downward.

Whoa mama! You look great! I don’t think I’m brave enough to try this myself.

I was so scared to try it, but a great video and good pair of scissors helped ๐

wowzie that is impressive!! I do not think I would have the guts to do this. You really did a phenomenal job. Though I must say I wish I could get a lesson on how to cut bangs well. I am so tired of going to stylists and not getting what I ask for. I spend time researching, I bring in an arm load of pictures explain in detail what I want and why. And they just cut my hair the way they would have if I just said “cut my hair and give me bangs” why can’t stylists listen, and why can’t they cut bangs well? So yep I want to learn to cut my own bangs.

My hair isn’t anywhere nearly as long as yours, but that is a great tutorial. Thanks for sharing! Ok – and you look amazing!

I’m sure you could do a modified version for shorter hair if it was to your bra line…
